The recent confirmation of a second bird flu case in a native hawk in New Zealand has sparked concern and action from the government. A technical advisory group of expert scientists will also be established to guide the response efforts.
Hoggard noted that hawks can contract the virus through hunting, eating, or scavenging infected birds, and their coastal hunting habits during winter make them particularly vulnerable. The government is offering support to free-range farmers, allowing them to temporarily house their birds as a precaution. However, Hoggard also emphasized the need to adapt to living with bird flu, as eradication is not feasible. He assured the public that chicken and eggs remain safe to consume and that the risk to human health is very low.
The Department of Conservation (DOC) has initiated a vaccination program, administering the first doses to 67 birds from six species or populations. This program aims to protect core breeding birds from five endangered species, including kākāpō and takahē. The DOC has also received approval for a second tranche of vaccinations, with the list of species deliberately left open to accommodate new detections and emerging risks. Hoggard expressed gratitude to the public for their cooperation in reporting potential cases and reminded them to avoid touching unwell birds.
